Brothers and Sisters, there are approximately 3,500 abortions a day in this country; about 1.3 million a year. The Psalmist writes: For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
There are no civil liberties when it comes to God’s ability to search you out. God is the One who forms and puts us together, so He and He alone has the right to declare and define life. And how does God speak of life? The Psalmist speaks in the most intimate terms: “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.”
If the fetus were not a real life, then there would be no need for God to concern Himself so deeply with the life in the womb. The promise of the Psalmist is that God cares so deeply for life that He judges those who take life. From the beginning, God says: Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
But our frustration as those who believe in the sacredness of human life is that men who shed innocent blood, run innocently in the streets as if nothing wrong has happened; as if unborn infants simply were not made to survive in this world, as if they were not made to take their first breath in this creation, as if they were not made to survive. What sort of barbaric rationale is this?
The unrighteous run around acting innocent when we know their hands are stained with innocent blood. We have heard over the last few years of men who have taken justice in their own hands and killed abortionists. But this is not sanctioned in the Scriptures. To murder a murderer is to become a murderer yourself. But God indeed brings justice in peculiar ways by using the wicked to destroy the wicked. He also uses the means of the government to act justly, as Roman 13 states. But our government has not acted justly on this matter, since 1973. What are we to do?
The Psalmist does not leave us without answer. It may not be the sort of immediate justice as you would expect, but we have an advocate. The Psalmist writes in Psalm 139: Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God! O men of blood, depart from me! 20 They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain! 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? 22 I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies.
God hates these acts of barbarism and he calls us to call on Him to act on behalf of the innocent. Unlike the civil sphere, the heavenly sphere works in perfect justice. He will bring justice to earth! He will vindicate the righteous ones.
Let us begin today by calling out that His perfect justice would come on earth as it is in heaven.
I exhort you to consider that the Psalter provides the perfect guide to a just society. Let us sing it!
Consider that men fails, but God never does. Consider that judgment will come to those who take innocent life. Consider that prayer for justice is a divine mandate. Consider that one day before Jesus Christ returns, the justice of God will be spread throughout the world, but consider that only when He returns will full justice be upheld and implemented in the New Heavens and New Earth. While on earth, continually pray that His justice would come.
I exhort you to give this morning to Safe Harbor’s Resource Center as they educate women and provide the counseling necessary to persuade them to avoid this act that will affect them for the rest of their lives. So let us pray for the mercy and justice of God.
Prayer: Our God of all life, when we pray “lead us not into temptation” we pray that we would not be tempted to call good evil and evil good. We pray that women all over this country would not be tempted to accept the lie of the evil one, among the most masterful temptations of the evil one is to make the killing of a child seem better than the birth of that child. This is the lie that leads each day to thousands of abortions.
As we pray, “Lead us not into temptation,” we keep in mind the need to protect all pregnant mothers from the deception of abortion. We also pray against the temptation to be silent and passive in the midst of this holocaust. Sins of omission are the most frequent sins, especially in regard to the culture of death. As we pray “lead us not into temptation,” we resolve to say: Bring justice, O Lord!
We ask that this country would be delivered from the influence and power of the evil one. His kingdom of death has been defeated, and so his power is limited, but he still seeks to lead us astray. We are praying that we will not be deceived by the false promises of the evil one, who presents abortion as a solution to a problem, though it is no such thing.
So we ask that as your kingdom comes, your power and glory be made manifest, instead of innocent children being slaughtered, we pray the act of abortion would be annihilated from this nation and world for the sake of your kingdom and the joy of each new life You bring, in the name of Jesus Christ, the giver of life we pray. Amen.
