Elizabeth Browning’s beautiful sonnet How do I love thee? Let me count the ways concludes with the words:
Smiles, tears, of all my life!—and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
I shall but love thee better after death.
Though perhaps not her intention in writing, theologically she does make a good point. Love excels after death for those in Christ. Love is taken to its highest manifestation at the Great Resurrection. We shall love one another “better after death.”
