Cyprian and Trinitarian Baptism..

Hooper makes an important point about Cyprian’s dictum: “nulla salvus extra ecclesiam” — outside the church there is no salvation. Hooper notes that, “The Fourth Lateran Council (ca. 1215) allowed that Cyprian could be wrong and that salvation could exist outside the church, but not outside Christ.” However, “The Fifth Lateran Council (ca. 1512-1517), though, reaffirmed Cyprian’s dictum “nulla salvus extra ecclesiam” –outside the church there is no salvation, excluding the Greek Christians.”1 Cyprian, of course, referred to the Roman Church as the source of salvation. Notice that the Fifth Lateran Council occurred during the birth of the Reformation. Cyprian’s dictum is also found in the Westminster Confession of Faith, though, the WCF did not limit the church to the Roman Church. The Genevan reformer John Calvin, writing his Institutes of the Christian Religion at the very time of the Reformation, wrote therein “beyond the pale of the Church no forgiveness of sins, no salvation, can be hoped for.” Hence, the Reformation brought with its dogma a strong view of the salvific nature of the church, though not as exclusive as Rome.2

Cyprian’s dictum, however, can be used in a conciliatory fashion, though his intention was one of exclusivity. Though there are clear sacramental and ecclesial distinctions among the Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox tradition, all share a Trinitarian Baptism. This baptism, brings infants and adults to enjoy the benefits of the true church, no matter how wrong it may be in certain areas.

  2. Of course, the Confession certainly had anti-catholic sentiments and I am certain that they would have considered Rome an apostate church; the anti-christ–gladly that was changed in the Revision. [ back]

All power and authority

In light of my talk tomorrow at New Life Presbyterian on the Wrath of God, I decided to post my introductory paragraph with the hope that I shall post the rest at some other opportune time.

If the love of God is inseparable from His holy character, than His wrath is no different; as I have argued in my lesson on the Love of God, God is the plenipotentiary, meaning, He is invested with full power, authority, and strength. Unlike leaders and dictators of this world, whose plenipotentiary derives from the people or through manipulation, God is all powerful and able to do what He pleases because He is God. No one can bestow power to God, since power finds its completion in God himself. Just as Hebrews tells us that God can swear by no one but Himself, since no one matches the authority and honor of God, then perfect power and authority rests on God alone, for there is no other who shares in His perfect glory and holiness.

Polling Report

In a surprising (only for the media) new updated polling from Fox News, (this poll is based only on registered voters, so there is no possibility of scam) Congressman Ron Paul is up to 3% tied with Mike Huckabee. He is in 6th place assuming Newt Gingrich and Fred Thompson enter the race. As for Sam Brownback, his poor performance at the Ames Straw poll ( in light of the enormous amount of effort and money he spent) continues to have negative results. He is tied with Tom Tancredo with 1%. Sam, I think it’s time.

The Defender of the Church…

Psalm 129 is a Psalm of great comfort to the church of Christ. Amidst turmoil, God promises that the enemies of Zion a will be put to shame and turned backward. b God promises that His glorious church ever shall prevail. As Calvin so perfectly summarized the purpose for the church’s suffering:

…that God subjects his Church to divers troubles and affections, to the end he may the better prove himself her deliverer and defender. c

Back to school…

After three long months, classes resumed at RTS. I spent most of my day going up and down taking care of business. I had to get together all my books for Frame’s independent study, which he, with great sophistication titled: The Thought of Abraham Kuyper. Then, I was able to have my second exegesis directed study approved by Dr. Hill. I will be translating I, II, and III John. 16 hours ahead of me…and then, there are those extra curricular activities like conquering the world, putting a Constitutional president in Office in 09, reversing Roe. V. Wade, and of course…finding a job after December.
