Our gospel lesson this morning teaches us that God does not overlook his servants’ faithfulness. Joseph is a model of godliness for the people of God. His love for Mary and his love for God’s law reveal what sort of people we should be. In the same manner, when we come to this table, we are revealing what kind of people we are. We are revealing that we love righteousness and we love Christ’s body.
This table is a picture that just as Joseph acted with love and care for Mary, so too, Christ acts with love and care for His own. This table is a picture of his eternal love for His people. And this heavenly picture is only available for us because Immanuel has come. Let us enjoy the care of our Lord for us at this table.
