Exhortation: The Strong Name of the Trinity

A blessed Trinity Sunday and a Happy Father’s Day to the fathers in our congregation:

Fatherhood is no easy task, especially when you view it through biblical eyes. Biblically, fatherhood is not just the task of raising children, but raising them in a particular way. The way Fathers begin to accomplish this task is by imitating their heavenly Father. What do we know about our heavenly father? We know that He is kind, gracious, and nurturing, but we also know that He chastens and disciplines his own children. In the Father’s grace there is law and in His law there is grace. Our heavenly Father does not love so He may forget to deal with unrighteousness nor is He so concerned about disciple and unrighteousness that He forgets to show his love towards His own. After all, by love the Father drew us to Himself and by love He preserves us as His own.

The Fifth Commandment states that children are to honor their fathers. Children, by honoring you father you are also honoring your Heavenly Father. Fathers, the more you imitate your Father in heaven the more will your honor be increased on earth.

But this morning, we also celebrate Trinity Sunday.

Cornelius Van Til once wrote that: “Every fact in this world, the God of the Bible claims, has His stamp indelibly engraved upon it.” What we celebrate on this Trinity Sunday is the glory of the Triune God stamped in all of history. So, on this day we bind unto ourselves the strong Name of the Trinity. The Strong Name who will guard us against the demon snares of sin, the vice that gives temptation force, the natural lusts that war within, the hostile men that mar our courses…against all powers, we bind unto ourselves today the Strong Name of the Trinity; the One who sustains all creation and gives us the breath to exalt Him in song, even as we sing this morning of this great power. All praise Father, Son, and Spirit, One God in Three Persons, now and Forever.

Prayer: As we sing St. Patrick’s Breastplate this morning, and as we bind unto ourselves this Strong Name of the Trinity, cause us to see Your sacred call to gather this morning and to live in the purity of Jesus Christ, the Holy One of God. Amen.
