The Straight Paths

There is a great fondness for geometric straightness in Solomon’s words in Proverbs. This fondness is also expressed in John the Baptist’s declaration as the one who would present Messiah to the world: “…make straight his paths.” In Proverbs, the king uses this to contrast the ways of the wicked who delight in twisting and perverting, and deviating from those paths. Instead of straight ways, they prefer a self-made path. Their blindness leads them directly into a pit. The righteous, however, delight and walk in these paths (Prov. 3:5-6). As Bruce Waltke observes:

The lifestyle of complete loyalty to Yahweh and others is the inalienable possession of those who by definition do not stray from the divinely revealed straight path.
